Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why use goats instead of heavy machinery?
Goat can get into all the hard to reach places that machines can't. They fertilize the land as they work, leaving it better than when they started. They're quieter than machines, fun to watch, and aren't scared of a little poison ivy.
  • What would prevent me from being able to rent your goats?
The health of our goats is our priority. To keep them safe, there are some properties that we will not be able to service. Due to biosecurity reasons, we would need to know if there has ever been sheep or goats on your property and when. There are certain plants that are toxic to goats, such as Mountain Laurel. If we cannot manually remove the plants, we would not be able to service your property. We also want you to be happy with the final result so we will make sure having our goats out is worth it for you too. Each project is different so schedule an in person or phone consult and we can let you know if we think our goats are right for your job.
  • What do I need to do if I have your goats on my property?
NOTHING! We come and check on them daily to fill their waters and give any supplements they may need. We do not allow clients to interact with the goats and ask that you watch them work from afar. The fence is electrified by solar power and can be dangerous if not respected.
  • What breeds of chickens do you have?
We originally started with Black Stars and Americanas along with a few "rarer" breeds for fun back in 2020. Since then, we have had some chickens hatch cluthes of eggs giving us some mixed breeds. After seeing the performance and longevity of the larger black stars compared to the smaller Americana, we have decided to stick with larger breeds of layers. This year, we added Black Astrolorps to the flock and look forward to seeing how they stack up.
  • How do the birds all work together to improve the land?
All 3 species work together at different level of the land. The ducks aerate the top layer, digging small holes while trampling the grass as compared to the chicken scratch the land. Both are omnivores that love to eat bugs and worms as well as grasses. The geese on the other hand are herbivores and only eat grasses. They also like to eat tender roots which helps to increase the diversity of plants on the landscape.
  • Why muscovy ducks?
Muscovies are much quieter than other duck breeds. They actually make hissing noises instead of quacking. They can make great mothers and grow quite quickly if using them for meat. The quality of their carcass is also drastically different than other ducks.
  • Why do you have geese?
We added African geese to the farm in 2023 initially to be guard geese. Any time someone arrives or walks by them, they alert us. They also are great at eating grasses that the chickens and ducks do not. The geese have interesting personalities and have grown on us overall. Now we are hoping to have a breeding pair so that we can have goslings to sell.
